Our Story
Over a year ago, a team of 5 physicians, scientists and engineers set out to create a new kind of wearable device. This device would leverage the power of two of nature’s fundamentals: light and thermal energy and their effect on the body.
This device would not simply measure your heart rate or other common fitness metrics like most other wearables do today. Rather, it would enable anyone tooptimize their body’s function by simply using light and cold energy to ultimatelyrevolutionize human performance.
In June of 2015, the Quantlet made its debut during during the keynote speech at the Voice & Exit 2015 conference by Dr. Jack Kruse, one of the Quantlet's inventors. Dr. Kruse is a respected Neurosurgeon and author of the book Epi-paleo Rx: The Prescription for Disease Reversal and Optimal Health.
There, Dr. Kruse shared his findings and explained just how he lost 133 pounds and packed on muscle in a matter of months. More importantly, he also discussed why he used light and cold to achieve his impressive results.
Specifically, Dr. Kruse revealed how the Quantlet uses a technique calledphotobiomodulation to deliver multiple frequencies of light into the body to achieve remarkable physical results. That’s a big word, so let’s break it down into its component parts:
PHOTO = Light. BIO = Life. MODULATION = Change.
The effects of photobiomodulation were discovered over 40 years ago and have since been studied at such prestigious institutions as Harvard and NASA.
Photobiomodulation has a photochemical effect (much like photosynthesis in plants). One of the main mechanisms of action occurs inside mitochondria, the energy power plant inside every cell.
Photobiomodulation's effects depend on the application of the appropriate wavelength and density of light, delivered to the target tissues for aspecific period of time.
Most of the scientific evidence for photobiomodulation has focused on its impressive effects on tissue repair (skin wounds, muscle, tendon, bone, nerves), but also how it reduces inflammation and eradicates pain wherever light of particular characteristics is applied. (PubMed refs)
According to peer-reviewed scientific literature, light acts at the cellular level by stimulating cells to generate more energy and utilize oxygen more effectively.
Within certain blood-based cells exist mitochondria, which produce cellular energy in the form of a molecule called adenosine triphosphate or ATP for short. An enzyme in mitochondria known as cytochrome c-oxidase (CCO) utilizes light's photons to increase ATP and reduce oxidative stress. A cascade of mitochondrial and intracellular downstream effects then lead to astounding effects including tissue repair and reduced inflammation. (Pubmed refs)
What Has Been Largely Missed Is That Photobiomodulation Can Also Enhance Athletic Performance
In multiple studies conducted across the globe in countries such as Germany, Russia, China, and Brazil, investigators have long noted that when using specific frequencies and intensities of light for the irradiation of blood, subjects in those studies showed improvements in lipid levels and cholesterol, blood sugar, clotting and immunity.
Strikingly, in Sports Medicine in particular, photobiomodulation has demonstrated increased exercise capacity and longer exercise times, as well as improved biomarkers (including reduced lactate, creatine kinase, and CRP) after exercise in athletes treated with red and infrared light.

It has also been reported to release certain brain compounds that positively affect mood and sleep.
For example, the Italian researchers Raggi and Vallesi published a groundbreaking study in athletes for investigation of the effect of blood irradiation on strength and endurance. [1].
Published in the German journal “Schmerz & Aupunktur" in 2008, the study's investigators found that athletes demonstrated remarkable physiologic benefits, including increased their exercise performance by over 20% in multiple exercise categories from just 10 days of blood irradiation.
What's more interesting is that they observed these effects lasted for 16 weeks after the end of the treatment! The researchers hypothesized that this duration had to do with red blood cells’ mean lifetime: 12-15 weeks.
So, we decided to leverage these findings and put them on a wrist device that would enhance compliance with its use
By irradiating the skin on the wrist to reach the blood non-invasively, we hypothesized that we could achieve the same or at least similar results that scientists have reported, including improvements in sports performance and physical, mental disposition and even sleep quality.
The Quantlet uses red and infrared LEDs to obtain a photobiomodulating effect just as powerful as the invasive intravenous method effect used by researchers and by leveraging the so-called "optical window" in tissue, which allows light to penetrate the skin most effectively. And, it also uses LEDs in the “black light”, blue and green range.
There are three main reasons for the light frequency sets that the Quantlet uses: (i) the NADH-complex absorbs light in the blue range, (ii) blue and green light has an effect on HEME within red blood cells and (iii) these frequencies promote light-mediated vasodilation.

Again, the science can get pretty thick, but what matters is that we are using thebody's own capacity to perform at its best by giving it two forms of energy it can use: Light & Cold.
...But that’s not all the Quantlet will do…
The Quantlet is also designed to actively cool your blood. Why does that matter?
As it turns out, physical and mental functions are impaired when your body’s core temperature increases or you get hot
That is why more and more athletes are using cold to produce a performance-enhancing effect during short and intense resistance exercises.
However, research of the effects of local cooling on muscle function during exercise has produced inconsistent findings. This is likely due to the different locations and strategies being used for cooling, which range from the use of cold water or ice baths, cold drinks, gel cold packs, as well as very wildly varied timing and duration of cooling.
More importantly, the conventional cooling methods most people are using are typically applied to the skin’s surface. Because of that, they are generally ineffective at cooling the body’s core and key organs like the brain.
This is because they don’t penetrate through the body’s insulating layers of tissue. Worse than that, the cold itself can result in vasoconstriction of the peripheral blood vessels and actually cause the opposite effect rather than the desired one.
But, everyone from Olympic trainers all the way through to the military’s Special Forces have pushed researchers to find better and more consistent ways to cool the body.
Some of these researchers have been successful
For example, researchers at Stanford University successfully demonstrated that heat can be extracted from the body core through the palm of the hand. They accomplished this through the use of a specialized glove that uses a vacuum to negate the effect that cold has on vasoconstriction.
A challenge that remained, however, was the practicality of the device design given its size, weight and configuration.
We thought we could find a better way to achieve similar results…and we did.
Early test results indicate that the Quantlet’s novel, patent-pending configuration achieves most of the benefit of hand cooling without the use of a vacuum-assisted glove.
Instead, the Quantlet achieves these results by simply extracting heat through the skin of the wrist. While the thermal conductivity of skin varies, the Quantlet achieves heat transfer rates approximating those observed at Stanford through a much more practical wearable design.
The Quantlet’s Cooling Module uses electronic components called thermoelectric coolers (TECs) that leverage something known as the Peltier effect. By using a solid-state electronic mechanism to cool the body, our team removed the need for any cooling fluids and minimized the device's footprint.
Further, the Quantlet's Lighting Module stimulates vasodilation through the localized release of nitric oxide (NO) by irradiating the placement site with appropriate light frequencies. So, it does not need a vacuum pump either! This feature has the bonus effect of systemically releasing NO and enhancing oxygen uptake by helping blood vessels dilate and improving blood flow.
Through the Quantlet’s specially designed heat-sink and cooling fan, the device achieves remarkable TEC efficiency, enabling its cooling surface to reach low enough temperatures to provide an extremely powerful heat exchange, even when operating in relatively high temperature environments.
Our experiments with the Quantlet’s multiple iterations also helped us make improvements in the Cooling module’s heat exchange plate design and the Light module’s most optimal LED placement, power density and light frequency set to maximize the synergistic effect of Light & Cold on your body.
